Rowan Court File or State Certificate?

For a Rowan County divorce case or case documentation, use the Rowan County Clerk of Court. North Carolina Vital Records also issues divorce certificates from 1958 to present and states that certificates can be obtained from the Clerk of Court in the county where the divorce was filed.

Find the right Rowan County record

  1. 01
Confirm the case is Rowan County

The county route matters because the Clerk of Court holds the filed case.

  2. 02
Use the Clerk for case documentation

Rowan County’s own public-record form routes divorce records to the Clerk of Court.

  3. 03
Use Vital Records for a certificate

The state holds divorce certificates from 1958-present. On the NC Vital Records Order a Certificate page, choose the divorce option and provide the spouses’ names, divorce date and place. A certified copy requires proof of identity and eligibility: the record subject, a qualifying family member, a person needing it to determine personal or property rights, or an authorized representative of an eligible person. A general researcher can request an uncertified informational copy unless a legal restriction applies; it is not accepted for legal purposes.

Case record versus certificate

Need Custodian What to expect

North Carolina divorce certificate NC Vital Records or county Clerk of Court Certificate containing names, proceeding roles, dates and other certificate information
Correction to a divorce certificate County Clerk of Court where filed NC Vital Records directs divorce certificate changes to the county Clerk

A certificate is not the full divorce file

NC Vital Records describes the information on a divorce certificate and then directs users who need additional case-source documentation and details to the Clerk of Court in the county where the divorce was filed. That makes the certificate useful for the event record but not a replacement for the underlying court file.

If you do not know the exact case number, start with names and an approximate divorce date. Keep the county fixed during the search so a same-name case from a different North Carolina county is not silently merged into the Rowan County result.

Fee
Current state certificate fee
NC Vital Records currently lists a $24 nonrefundable standard certificate search fee per three-year period, including one copy if a record is found. County Clerk fees or copy procedures can differ, so do not transfer the state fee to the local court request. Applicable processing and shipping charges can be additional; check the selected ordering method and current processing dates before placing an order.
